Het bedrijf biedt tegen de betaling van zo’n 165 euro een certificaat aan. Er wordt getoetst hoe lang je werkzaam bent, of je werk kwalitatief goed is en authentiek is en of je een kunstacademie hebt gevolgd. Kom je door de toetsing, dan krijg je een certificaat en mag je jezelf certified artist noemen; over een periode van 5 jaar zul je opnieuw getoets worden en weer voor een certificaat moeten betalen.
Het beroep beeldende kunstenaar is niet beschermd en er zijn geen vergunningen nodig om het beroep uit te oefenen. Iedereen kan beeldend kunstenaar zijn, gebasserd op studies en werk. Een aangekochte certificaat voegt niets toe aan jouw beroep. Het bewijst in zekere zin niets.
Bovendien, toetsing op kwaliteit en authenticiteit is complex. Fondsen hebben hier commissies voor waarbij de namen van de toetsers openbaar zijn voor transparantie. Wie de toetsing voor het International Institute for Artist Accreditation is niet duidelijk.
De BBK staat kritisch tegenover deze certificaten en adviseert kunstenaars om ook kritisch te zijn tegenover dit soort praktijken. Je bent al waardig door je studies en jouw werk, en door jouw lidmaatschap bij een beroepsvereniging zoals de BBK.

To buy a certificate?
Every once in a while, a company pops up that arranges certificates for artists, such as the company International Institute for Artist Accreditation which certifies artists. For how much is this rubbish?
The company offers a certificate for the payment of about 165 euros. It claims to judge on how long you have been working, whether your work is of high quality and authentic and whether you have attended an art school. After positive result you receive a certificate and you may call yourself a certified artist. After a period of 5 years you need to reapply for the certificate.
The profession of an artist is not protected in The Netherlands and no license is required to practice the profession. Everyone can be an artist, based on studies and work. A bought certificate does not add anything to your profession; it proves nothing. Furthermore, testing on quality and authenticity is complex. Funds have commissions for this where the names of the test players are public for transparency. Who is doing the quality testing at the International Institute for Artist Accreditation is not transparent.
BBK is critical of these certificates and advises artists to also be critical towards this kind of practices. You as visual artist, you are already creditable through your studies and your work, and by your membership in a professional association like the BBK.
